Over 70 million Americans have suffered from a mental illness over the past year, providing a sizeable market opportunity. Key growth drivers in mental health include:

  • Significant growth in mental illness among youth.
  • Consequential impact of COVID-19 on mental health.
  • Growing acceptance of mental health and awareness of available treatments reduce the stigma.
  • According to CDC, provisional drug overdose deaths rose almost 30% last year.

The current addressable market for mental health care is $92 billion, including $49 billion in potential demand not being served. Today, mental health care has gone from an afterthought of employers and commercial insurers to a top-five employer health concern and a key focus of commercial insurers and government legislators.

The markets for residential mental health care, partial hospitalization programs, and intensive outpatient programs are all highly fragmented. M&A activity in the behavioral space remains active as private equity funds look to capitalize on the sector’s impressive growth. Private equity has acquired platforms in the behavioral health space, with 22 of 29 deals coming from PE sponsors in the 2nd quarter of 2021. In the first half of 2021, there were 119 behavioral health deals.
